Alex Graf was born in January 1971 and died in an accident in China in October 2003 while working on a film for Columbia Pictures Asia. To commemorate his life, Alex’s family has established the Alex Graf Memorial Scholarship Fund. During his life, Alex was able to pursue his dreams of living in China and working in the film industry because of his educational opportunities. Alex’s family would like to provide the diverse, low-income student population of Lighthouse Community Charter School with similar opportunities in the form of scholarships for attending college. Through his close relationship with his cousin, Laura Kretschmar, a founding teacher of Lighthouse, Alex was a welcome and frequent visitor to the school. He believed in and shared the mission of the Lighthouse Community Charter School.
The Lighthouse Community Charter School enrolls an ethnically diverse, low-income population of Oakland. Currently, in its ninth year of operation, Lighthouse is fully enrolled with 650 students and maintains a healthy waiting list for families who wish to send their children to the school. Students are selected by lottery. Lighthouse has given four total scholarships over the last two years to Angelica Cuevas (Dominican University); Alejandro Zepeda (University of San Francisco); Isidro Ruvalcaba (U.C. Davis); and Juan Carlos Perez (University of San Francisco.
Lighthouse is a non-profit 501c3 organization. All gifts are tax deductible. Check, credit card, or stock donations are accepted. Please send your donations to:
