Our Results

Lighthouse has demonstrated increasing results each year since opening its doors in 2002, making it a recognized leader in Oakland and the State of California. The K-8 program recently received the highest possible ranking - a 10 out of 10 - when compared to all other schools in the State of California serving similar students. The 9-12 program is now one of the top three high schools in Oakland regardless of students served or income levels.

As a public school, Lighthouse is evaluated across multiple performance measures. For information about these measures and our growth, please school down or use the following links to jump to specific information:

Academic Performance Index (API)

The K-8 and 9-12 programs have demonstrated consistent increases in their Academic Performance Index (API) scores, assigned each year by the State of California. These scores are calculated based on the annual state testing results. The goal for all schools in California is 800 points - Lighthouse is rapidly closing in on this target.

Annual Yearly Progress (AYP)

One of the drivers of API growth has been the increase in students scoring at the proficient and advanced levels on the California Standards Test (CST). Both the K-8 and 9-12 programs have demonstrated consistent increases in both English Language Arts and Math over the past years:

K-8 Math Proficiency Levels Over Time

Under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation, growth targets are set each year for schools. These targets are measured across multiple different categories. Lighthouse has made a substantial number of these targets over the past several years, meeting in all 21 of 21 in the 2007-2008 school year. However, the school missed the target by 0.1% in 1 of 19 categories in 2006-07 and again in 1 of 21 categories in 2008-09. As a result, despite the large gains in proficiency the K-8 is officially in Program Improvement status.

California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)

All High School Students in California must pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) and have five chances to do so. Lighthouse students take the CAHSEE for the first time as 10th graders - 94% of them passed the math on their first attempt and 88% passed the English Language Arts.
