Vision and History of LCCS
The vision of LCCS was borne out of the belief that every child
has the right to an excellent education. Starting with a core
group of educators committed to educational equity, we dedicated
two years to planning the design and implementation of the school
in August of 2000. Since then, our core group of educators has
grown to include families and community members who were inspired
to develop a school where all children can achieve.
The Lighthouse Community Charter School was unanimously approved
by the Oakland Unified School District in June of 2001. Currently,
we are the "Pilot School" in the Charter School Development
Center’s Incubator and have committed to a two-year school
design process. Our development efforts have been praised by city
officials, school district leaders, educators, and community members
across Oakland.
Charter Schools
Charter schools are nonsectarian public schools of choice that
operate with freedom from many of the regulations that apply to
traditional public schools. The "charter" establishing
each such school is a performance contract detailing the school's
mission, program, goals, students served, methods of assessment,
and ways to measure success. The length of time for which charters
are granted in California is 5 years. At the end of the term,
the entity granting the charter may renew the school's contract.
Charter schools are accountable to their sponsor—in our
case, the Oakland Unified School District -- to produce positive
academic results and adhere to the charter contract. The basic
concept of charter schools is that they exercise increased autonomy
in return for this accountability. They are accountable for both
academic results and fiscal practices to several groups: the sponsor
that grants them, the parents who choose them, and the public
that funds them.
